Meeting with delegation led by Mr. Martin Romer, Director of European Trade Union Committee for Education

On 6 May, 2013, Chairman of the Republican Committee of Independent Trade Union of Azerbaijan Education Employees (ITUAEE) and member of parliament Sattar Mehbaliyev received delegation led by Director of European Trade Union Committee for Education Martin Romer, who was visiting Azerbaijan in the frames of “ICT in Education: preventing early school leaving through the use of ICT” project.

In the meeting, future development of cooperation between ETUCE and ITUAEE was discussed. The parties exchanged views on “ICT in Education: preventing early school leaving through the use of ICT” project. S. Mehbaliyev talked about Azerbaijan’s success  in the ICT field and noted that it is impossible to imagine the modern world without Information and Communication Technologies. In last decades, ICT became  a fundamental factor to determine the development level of society: “Development of ICT has been put forward as one of the key priorities of the state and some purpose-oriented measures have been taken in this regard”.

The ITUAEE head said that 2013 has been declared as the year of ICT in Azerbaijan by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and first telecommunication satellite of Azerbaijan “Azerspace-“1was launched into the space. In 2012, more than 400 million USD was invested in ICT sector. Education field has been one of the areas that most benefited from the opportunities of ICT in Azerbaijan, S. Mehbaliyev added.

Since the ICT use is considered worldwide to be the key element of the information society, a vast portion of the measures taken in Azerbaijan in this regard, is underlied by the ICT use in education sector of Azerbaijan. For this purpose, several programs have been adopted and implemented in Azerbaijan. The ITUAEE head also spoke about the Armenian occupation of  20% territory of Azerbaijan and added that Azerbaijan would have been among the highly developed countries of the world if it were not for the Karabakh problem.  

Mr. Romer thanked for friendly reception and noted that he was pleased with the participation of the Republican Committee of ITUAEE in “ICT in Education: preventing early school leaving through the use of ICT” project. He said cooperation between European Trade Union Committee for Education and ITUAEE Republican Committee grew day by day. “For us, Azerbaijan is a door to Eastern Europe,” the guest said and added that his organization is interested in close cooperation  with the ITUAEE Republican Committee.
